Dr. Bob Birch received his B.A. in Psychology in 1960, his M.A. in 1962, and his in Ph. D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1967. He began as a child and family therapist in a small mental health center in Baraboo, Wisconsin. He then moved to a large mental health center bassed in Zanesville, Ohio, where he became Chief Psychologist and eventually the Clinical Director. In May, of 1970, while at the Center he established the very first Crisis Hotline in the State of Ohio.

He completed the postgraduate training program in Gestalt Therapy at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland. Subsequently he practices as a psychologist for over 35 years. After 10 years of experience in public mental health agencies, Dr. Birch went into private practice and began what became a 25 year specialty in marital and sex therapy. He characterizes his professional interests as centering around intimate and caring physical and emotional relationships. Dr. Birch has now retired from practice and spends his time in rural Ohio writing. He is active in the local Mental Health Association, having served two years as Board President and being named the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year (2004). He also remains active on the internet, answering questions about sexuality, not only from his own web site, but from three other popular informational sites. He now identifies himself as a Sexologist and an Adult Sexuality Educator.

During the late 1970's, when sensitivity groups were popular, he brought together a group of mental health professionals with interests in Gestalt Therapy and group process and founded the Humanistic Institute of Ohio. He was elected President of the Institute and organized and lead a number of 24-hour sensitivity groups and sexuality awareness workshops.

After postgraduate training in the evaluation and treatment of sexual dysfunctions (including seminars with Masters & Johnson), Dr Birch established a private practice with a specialty in Marital & Sex Therapy. During his many years of clinical practice, Dr. Birch was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Psychology, a Fellow of the American Marriage and Family Therapy, and a Clinical Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Sexology, and was certified as a Sex Therapist and as a Sex Educator by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. He was also certified as a Family Therapist by the National Academy of Family Therapists, and served on the Examing Board of the American Board of Family Psychologists. He was an adjunct assistant professor at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and has taught courses as a guest instructor at The Ohio University - Zanesville Branch, Columbus State College, and Dayton University. He also served as the Sex Therapy Consultant to the Mental Health Clinic of Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

His expertise and experience in the sexuality field has been recognized by the American College of Sexology and through this professional organization is designated a Certified Sexologist.

Dr. Birch has presented well over 375 public lectures and workshops and has written and published scores of articles. He has been interviewed multiple times on television, has been a regular guest on a late night call-in radio program, and has been quoted extensively in books and articles, including articles in Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Teen, and the Men's Journal. A chapter on Female Sexuality, coauthored by Dr. Linda Bernhard and Dr. Birch, appears in 20 Common Problems in Women's Health Care (McGraw-Hill, 2000).

Three of his erotic books authored by Dr. Birch had been selected by the Venus Book Club (a division of Doubleday) as alternative selections.

Articles by Dr. Bob Birch appear on a number of Internet web sites. He has dedicated his clinical skills, his public speaking, and his writing to the enhancement of sensuality and sexuality, believing in the importance of a solid physical and emotional bond in the maintenance of long term relationships.

In 1996, Dr. Birch established and became the sole propietor of PEC Publishing® and began his writing and publishing that has kept him busy since his retirement in 1999.

Dr. Birch has published A Sex Therapist's Manual, a collection of reproducible clinical material which is of interest to sex therapists, marriage & family therapists, psychologists, counselors and social workers. However, his interest also include areas of sexual humor and bawdy limericks. A number of his original limericks have been published in the RIBALD RIMES pages of Penthouse magazine. Dr. Birch writes poetry in a wide variety of forms, and hosts a web site featuring his poetry, a tutorial on writing limericks, and offering a large selection of his original verse.

Beyond issues of sexuality, erotica and humor, Dr. Birch is interested in the processes of death and dying, the work of Hospice, and the process of grieving. He has presented workshops on men and grief. and a number of his serious poems have been published on web sites and in magazines dealing with loss and recovery.
